Herbert Knox Smith

Herbert Knox Smith, son of a former pastor of First Church in Farmington, graduated from Yale in 1891. He earned his law degree from Yale in 1895 and was admitted to the Connecticut Bar. In 1903, he became deputy commissioner of the Bureau of Corporations under President Roosevelt, and in 1907 was appointed commissioner. In 1912, he ran for governor of CT as a Progressive, but was defeated. During World War I he worked on the war effort and was discharged July 30, 1919. After serving as a director and vice president of Farmington Savings Bank, he became president in April, 1931.
