Event Date : 2018 Jan Sun
Join us at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2018 for a wine reception and live theater! Written by Lisa Johnson, Farmington resident and Executive Director of the Stanley-Whitman House, this large cast play brings to life the many people responsible for the witchcraft trial of Farmington’s Mary Barnes.
In 1663, Mary Barnes of Farmington was arrested on a charge of witchcraft. Within a few weeks, she had been found guilty and executed. Why did she meet this tragic fate? This play tells her story through the people who knew her, reconstructing a web of relationships that seeks to explain what happened.
You first met Mary Barnes last October in “Panic in Connecticut: Accused Witches Have Their Say,” but only heard about her life just before her execution. This performance focuses on her trial, introducing you to the many people involved, historic figures from Farmington and beyond.
Travel back once more with the Farmington Historical Society and Herstory Theater, to the time and culture in which Mary Barnes lived…and died.
“The Witchcraft Trial of Mary Barnes” is the second in a trilogy of Drama in Farmington Village performances told against the backdrop of 17th century Connecticut, based on painstaking research. The third performance features a staged reading of “Thank You” by Winchell Smith. Research and performances by Herstory Theater, bringing life to sung and unsung heroines of history.
